15 different ways to say A LOT OF

Today I’m going to be teaching you guys A HEAP, A TON, A STACK, A BUNCH, A SHIT-LOAD, A FUCK-TON OF different ways of saying A LOT OF or LOTS OF. Let’s go!

So, as you will have just heard in the intro there guys I used A WHOLE BUNCH OF different ways of saying A LOT OF or LOTS OF. So, we’re going to be going through A BUNCH OF different ways of saying the same thing, A LOT OF or LOTS OF today in this episode. So, these are called synonyms, and synonyms are words or phrases that mean the same as another phrase.

And so, A WHOLE BUNCH OF these are going to be in the singular form like A LOT OF, which is singular, A LOT. And then there’s also going to be a few that you can also say in the plural form like LOTS OF, that’s plural, LOTS.

So, we’ll go through a pronunciation exercise in a sec, but first I want to tell you exactly why I’m doing these episodes. The main goal of these episodes is to help your listening comprehension. So, when other native speakers in Australia, in particular, use these kinds of phrases, which they do, and I use these all the time, and have probably used them A WHOLE STACK in A BUNCH OF these different videos that I’ve made for you guys A WHOLE TON in the past. I want you guys to be able to understand these different phrases when you hear them, first and foremost, but then secondly, I want to treat you guys like artists learning to paint. When you learn to paint you probably start with black and white, right? Like, you start with one or two colours, and you slowly learn the basic concepts, you slowly learn how to paint. But then as you get more advanced you want to add different colours, you want to add different textures, different techniques, you want more on your palette, right? Like, you want to be able to make incredibly epic paintings, and you can’t necessarily do that with just black and white.

Learning English and speaking English is sort of the same, at least in this little analogy, I think. I want to give you exposure so that you learn all of these different synonyms guys, and you can add them to your palette for “painting” in English. So, you can express yourself in your own unique way depending on the synonyms you decide to use. So, practice saying all of them, practice understanding all of them, and if a few of them stand out, one or two, I would try using these as much as possible in day-to-day language.

So, on a side note too I’m going to be teaching you guys a few rude ones. They include the words CRAP, SHIT and FUCK. And so, if we put those on a scale of least rude to rudest, most rude, CRAP, SHIT and FUCK. I would not use these in any kind of formal situation. In fact, to start with guys use the rule “if in doubt, go without”. If you’re uncertain, if you don’t know whether or not you should use these, don’t use them. However, if you want to add a little flavour, if you want to sound more like a native, more like a local, and you hear people using these phrases when you have a conversation with them I wouldn’t worry about throwing them in or not. Just do it, no one’s going to care, especially if you’ve heard someone else just say the exact same thing in a conversation with you.

Alright. You smashed that out, guys. You’re on the other side. You survived. Good job! Now it’s time to up the ante a little bit, take it to the next level and do a substitution exercise.

So, in the following substitution exercise guys I’m going to be teaching you how to take A LOT OF and turn it into LOTS OF. So, we’re going to go from singular to plural, singular to plural, that’s what you’re going to be substituting. But, I’m also going to be using A WHOLE BUNCH OF different synonyms for GIRLS. GIRLS, WOMEN, CHICKS, BABES, LADIES. And A WHOLE BUNCH or A WHOLE LOAD of different synonyms for BOYS. BOYS, MEN, DUDES, GUYS and BLOKES.

So, not only am I going to help you practice learning these synonyms for A LOT OF, but also on the side we’re going to be practicing different ways of saying GIRLS and different ways of saying BOYS.

Substitution exercise 1: Singular → Plural

There’s a lot of hot women at the beach.
There’re lots of hot women at the beach.

There’s a ton of hot men at the beach.
There’re tons of hot men at the beach.

There’s a heap of hot girls at the beach.
There’re heaps of hot girls at the beach.

There’s a stack of hot boys at the beach.
There’re stacks of hot boys at the beach.

There’s a load of hot chicks at the beach.
There’re loads of hot chicks at the beach.

There’s a bucket-load of hot guys at the beach.
There’re bucket-loads of hot guys at the beach.

There’s a great deal of hot babes at the beach.
There’s a great deal of hot babes at the beach.

There’s a plethora of hot dudes at the beach.

So, let’s do one last little exercise guys where this time I’m going to get you to substitute in the word WHOLE, as in, the entire thing. Imagine you’ve got a cake. If you haven’t taken any pieces, you haven’t taken half the cake away, you’ve got the WHOLE cake. So, we often use this in Australian English, in English in general, you would say, instead of, for instance, “There’s A LOT OF hot CHICKS at the beach.” you could say, “There’s A WHOLE LOT OF hot CHICKS at the beach.”. So, let’s go.

Substitution exercise 2: Insert the word WHOLE

There’s a lot of hot chicks at the beach.
There’s a whole lot of hot chicks at the beach.

There’s a bunch of hot dudes at the beach.
There’s a whole bunch of hot dudes at the beach.

There’s a stack of hot women at the beach.
