wɔt dɪ[d]ðæɪ ʧæɪnʤ – ˈwɔɽ‿ɪ[d]ðæɪ ʧæɪnʤ

Why did we come? – Why’d we come?
wɑe dɪd wiː kɐm – wɑed wiː kɐm

Where did he go off to? – Where’d he go off to?
weː dɪd hiː gəʉ ɔf tʉː – weːɽ‿[h]iː gəʉ ɔf tʉː

When did she find out? – When’d she find out?
wen dɪ[d]ʃiː fɑendæɔt – wendʃiː fɑendæɔ[t]

Which did you want? – Which_do you want?
wɪʧ dɪd jʉː wɔnt – wɪʧʤɐ wɔn[t]

Who did I see? – Who’d I see?
hʉː dɪd ɑe siː – hʉːd‿ɑe siː

And so now, when it’s after a question word, it often merges with either the question word and/or the pronoun after it.

So, you’ll hear:

How did it…? – hæɔɽ‿əɽ‿et

Or you might hear:

Why did you…? – wɑe dɪd jʉː

Why did you…? – wɑe ʤjʉː

So, that /d/ and the /j/ sound, they get pushed together and it sounds like a /ʤ/ sound.

Why did you…? – wɑe ʤjʉː
