Embarrassing English Errors Ep05 – Cock & Coke

G’day guys and welcome to this episode of Aussie English. Today we’re going to go over the words “cock” and “coke”, “cock” and “coke”. So, the sounds “oh” and “oe”.

And the word “cock” is a slang term for a penis or a dick. Um… it’s low to medium rudeness. It’s not too bad. You’re going to offend a lot of people if you say this but still it’s nice to be able to speak and not accidently say “cock” when you want to say “coke”.

And “coke”, this is used when you’re talking about the drink Coca-cola, or when you’re talking about the drug cocaine, where it’s often said as “coke” instead of cocaine. But most commonly I’m sure you’re going to hear it as Coca-Cola the drink. Can I’ve a coke? I want a diet coke. A coke.

So, what are some other words in English that have that same “oh” sound from “cock”.

Cod

Cob

Con

Cong

Conk

Cog

Cop

Cost

Cot

Cox

Cough

Block

Crock

Frock

Knock

Jock

Lock

Flock

Shock

Sock

And what are some other words in English that have the same “oke” sound from the word “coke”?

Coach

Cope

Folk

Croak

Smoke

Soak

Spoke

Stroke

Stoke

Woke

Yoke

So, now let’s do a little back to back exercise with the sounds “ock” and “oke” with different consonants at the starts of these words. So, they may be real words. They may just be made up words, fake words, but it’s just for the sake of practicing the pronunciation.

Stock – Stoke

Lock – Loke

Block – Bloke

Thock – Thoke

Mock – Moke

Pock – Poke

Trock – Troke

So, now let’s just do the vowel sounds by themselves five times.

Oh – Oe x 5

And now let’s do the words “cock” and “coke” fives times back to back.

Cock – Coke x 10

So that’s it for today’s episode guys. In future episodes I’m going to do quite a few where swear words can be easily mistaken or accidentally pronounced instead of the word you’re trying to pronounce. And these are the kinds of embarrassing situations that I really want to help you avoid and to feel more confident talking about certain things that can often be mispronounced as rude words. So, let me know what you think. Jump on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheAussieEnglishPodcast and let me know what you think of these episodes so far guys. Don’t be afraid to send me a message or a comment if you have any um… suggestions on how I can improve and also if you have any other words or sounds in English that you’re finding really hard to pronounce. So, feel free to let me know and I’ll try and do an episode on those as soon as possible.

Anyway, guys. All the best! See you later!
