Why You Should Never Call Australians 'Buddy' [Members Only]
Learn Australian English by listening to this episode of The Goss!
These are conversations with my old man Ian Smissen for you to learn more about Australian culture, news, and current affairs.
In today's episode...
Welcome back to this week’s Members Only episode of The Goss!
It’s so interesting to know that with the English language, despite that it’s all the same words, can have a different meaning when used in certain parts of the world.
The term of endearment ‘buddy’ means ‘a good friend’ in the USA. But if you come here Down Under, and you start calling another (male) adult ‘buddy’, you’ll get eyebrows rising – or even fists flying!
Funnily enough, I, as an Aussie, certainly would not use ‘buddy’ when referring to my good friends. I’d call them ‘mate’. But I’d use ‘buddy’ on my son Noah!
We also talk about how media (like TV, podcasts, or social media) helps creates awareness that global languages can often confuse travelers. Because the same words they learned back in their hometown can mean totally different to someone halfway across the world!
Join us today as my dad Ian Smissen and I talk about other English words like “pal”, “champ”, or “bro” and how we would use them in daily conversations.
