Okay, all of these pronunciation videos are always based on my accent. 3 00:00:40,290 --> 00:00:58,371 So, with short vowels in English, short vowels are the ones that just last for a split second. There are some pairs in vowels in English where you will have one that is short and one that is long and it's the same sound and it's just that one of them is held for a little bit longer. Like the difference between the word 'cup' and 'carp' or the words 'bid' and 'beard'. 4 00:01:02,577 --> 00:01:34,050 So, there are seven of these guys and I'll take you through each of these. After that we're going to go through a few exercises where I am going to just use the same vowel sound across these seven short vowels and I'm going to create sets of minimal pairs where all the other sounds in the little words that I'll use stay constant, they stay consistently the same, but the vowel sounds going to change so that you can practice saying each of these sounds one after the other. Okay? Some of these words are made up so that it fit the pronunciation. 5 00:01:34,260 --> 00:01:40,709 All right, so we have the vowel /ɪ/ as in the words hid, lip, or it. 6 00:01:41,160 --> 00:01:46,004 We have the vowel sound /e/ in head, bet, or kept. 7 00:01:47,010 --> 00:01:51,739 We have the vowel sound /æ/ like at, hat, lap. 8 00:01:52,080 --> 00:01:56,910 We have the vast sound /ɐ/ as in hut, cup, luck. 9 00:01:57,390 --> 00:02:02,489 We have the vowel sound /ɔ/ as in hot, bot, lock. 10 00:02:02,970 --> 00:02:08,100 We have the vowel sound /ʊ/ as in hood, look, good. 11 00:02:08,340 --> 00:02:37,360 And lastly we have the schwa vowel sound, right (/ə/). So, this is used when words are reduced in sentences or its used for syllables that aren't stressed in English. Okay? So, words like 'suppose', 'around', 'effect' or single syllable words like 'can' when I say 'I can do that', or 'to' when I say 'I'm going to think about it'. Right? It's really subtle in there but the 'to' has actually become a schwa sound. 12 00:02:38,130 --> 00:02:56,550 So, let's go through these exercises, guys. I'll first just say all of the different vowel sounds one after the other, and then we'll go through a few different lists of minimal pairs where the consonants in the words are going to stay consistent but the vowels are going to change. Okay? So, just listen and repeat after me and practise your pronunciation of each of these different vowel sounds. 13 00:03:00,250 --> 00:03:01,250 ɪ e æ ɐ ɔ ʊ ə 14 00:03:19,129 --> 00:03:37,790 hɪd hed hæd hɐd hɔd hʊd həd 15 00:03:37,795 --> 00:03:57,660 tɪ te tæ tɐ tɔ tʊ tə 16 00:04:00,150 --> 00:04:17,220 ɪf ef æf ɐf ɔf ʊf əf 17 00:04:20,160 --> 00:04:37,349 bɪt bet bæt bɐt bɔt bʊt bət 18 00:04:37,529 --> 00:04:57,142 gɪθ geθ gæθ gɐθ gɔθ gʊθ gəθ 19 00:04:57,168 --> 00:05:18,430 ʃɪp ʃep ʃæp ʃɐp ʃɔp ʃʊp ʃəp 20 00:05:20,940 --> 00:05:32,009 Good job. So, I've designed these exercises so that you have different sounds in there from English different consonant sounds you have the vowels at the starts of these syllables or at the ends of these syllables. 21 00:05:32,040 --> 00:05:40,419 This is all in an effort to just help you use different kinds of, you know, positions and sounds in your mouth at the same time as practicing these different vowel sounds. 22 00:05:41,060 --> 00:05:52,866 So, to recap. There are seven different short vowel sounds in English. /ɪ/ /e/ /æ/ /ɐ/ /ɔ/ /ʊ/ and /ə/. 23 00:05:54,180 --> 00:06:07,619 I hope this video helps, guys.
