Contracting: MODAL VERBS + NOT + HAVE

Alright. Now, it’s time to take it up another notch, right, it’s time to take it up another level, and we’re going to be contracting MODAL VERBS with NOT and then HAVE after it as well, right? So, now this is kind of like a modal perfect tense that’s being negated: MIGHT NOT HAVE, SHALL NOT HAVE, etc.. Okay?

Let’s get into it!

Must not have
mɐst nɔt hæv

Mustn’t’ve
mɐs(t)nt‿əv

Mustn’t’ah
mɐs(t)nt‿ə(v)

Mustn’[t]’ve
mɐs(t)n[t]‿əv

Mustn’[t]’ah
mɐs(t)n[t]‿ə(v)

You’re going to end up with those kinds of variations.

Shall not have
ʃæl nɔt hæv

Shan’t’ve
ʃælnt‿əv

Shan’t’ah
ʃælnt‿ɐ(v)

Shan’[t]’ve
ʃæln[t]‿əv

Shan’[t]’ah
ʃæln[t]‿ɐ(v)

Will not have
wɪl nɔt hæv

Won’t’ve
wəʉnt‿əv

Won’t’ah
wəʉnt‿ɐ(v)

Won’[t]’ve
wəʉn[t]‿əv

Won’[t]’ah
wəʉn[t]‿ɐ(v)

Should not have
ʃʊd nɔt hæv

Shouldn’t’ve
ʃʊdnt‿əv

Shouldn’t’ah
ʃʊdnt‿ɐ(v)

Shouldn’[t]’ve
ʃʊdn[t]‿əv

Shouldn’[t]’ah
ʃʊdn[t]‿ɐ(v)

Could not have
kʊd nɔt hæv

Couldn’t’ve
kʊdnt‿əv

Couldn’t’ah
kʊdnt‿ɐ(v)

Couldn’[t]’ve
kʊdn[t]‿əv

Couldn’[t]’ah
kʊdn[t]‿ɐ(v)

Would not have
wʊd nɔt hæv

Wouldn’t’ve
wʊdnt‿əv

Wouldn’t’ah
wʊdnt‿ə(v)

Wouldn’[t]’ve
wʊdn[t]‿əv

Wouldn’[t]’ah
wʊdn[t]‿ɐ(v)

May not have
mæɪ nɔt hæv

In this case, remember, we’re not going to contract NOT onto MAY, but we will contract NOT and HAVE together. So, you’re going to get:

May not’ve
mæɪ nɔt‿əv

may not’ah
mæɪ nɔt‿ɐ(v)

may no[t]’ve
mæɪ nɔɽ‿əv

may no[t]’ah
mæɪ nɔɽ‿ɐ(v)

Might not have
mɑet nɔt hæv

Mightn’t’ve
mɑetənt‿əv

Mightn’t’ah
mɑetənt‿ɐ(v)

Migh[t]n’[t]’ve
mɑe[t](ə)n[t]‿əv

Migh[t]n’[t]’ah
mɑe[t](ə)n[t]‿ɐ(v)

Note: sometimes the ”ah’ sound can be either the schwa vowel sound /ə/ or a more opened-mouth /ɐ/ sound.
